Eleven migrants who were left stranded by smugglers on the uninhabited Monito Island, in Puerto Rico, were rescued by the US Coast Guard on Saturday, September 7.According to a press release issued by the coast guard, one of their boats was able to locate the migrants after the crew of a fishing vessel reported a group of people who appeared to be stranded on Monito Island.According to the press release, the 11 migrants claimed to be Haitian nationals.Footage released by the US Coast Guard Sector San Juan shows the rescue operation.Commanding officer Lt Peter Diamontopulos said he was “extremely proud” of his crew for rescuing the migrants “from a highly dangerous environment with no food or water and exposure to the elements.” Credit: U.S. Coast Guard Sector San Juan via Storyful
