Christmas Tree Bound for US Capitol Toured Through West Virginia

The US Capitol Christmas Tree made a stop in Wheeling, West Virginia, on Thursday, November 9, after being harvested on November 1 from Monongahela National Forest in eastern West Virginia.The crew transporting the 63-foot-tall Norway spruce hit the road on November 4. The convoy was touring various West Virginia towns and cities along the route to allow the public to view the tree. The last stop on the tour was scheduled for November 15 in Harpers Ferry, on the border of West Virginia and Virginia, about 50 miles (80 km) northwest of Capitol Hill in Washington, DC.According to the US Forest Service (USFS) the tree weighed about 8,000 pounds (3,629 kg) and was about 38 years old. After the holidays, its wood would be used by the Shawnee tribe at their ceremonial grounds in White Oak, Oklahoma, the USFS said.Monongahela last provided the Capitol tree, also known as the People’s Tree, in 1976, according to the forest service.
