Snow-covered roads led to at least one pileup and numerous stranded vehicles in New York’s Buffalo area on Thursday, December 12, as a lake-effect storm hammered the region.Local officials declared a
state of emergency for parts of western New York on Wednesday, and many schools were
closed in Buffalo and surrounding communities on Thursday. This footage, filmed by Daniel J. D. Pollina, shows the hazardous road conditions in West Seneca. Pollina told Storyful he witnessed at least one car get trapped in snow on an unplowed street.“We tried to help the car get unstuck but the snow was so deep where it wasn’t plowed…” Pollina said.“…Another truck came to try and help, they couldn’t, and then out of nowhere, a SWAT team vehicle pulled up. We were all laughing because we did not expect something as extreme as that to happen.”The National Weather Service (NWS)
warned that gusty winds combined with the heavy snow would produce “near-whiteout conditions at times” for parts of Erie County on Thursday.Snowy and cold conditions were expected to continue into Friday, according to the NWS. Credit: Daniel J. D. Pollina via Storyful
