The Brookfield Zoo in Illinois said a recently hatched Humboldt penguin chick is “thriving” after being taken under the wings of two fellow penguin “foster parents.”Video released by the Brookfield Zoo shows the chick, which the zoo said was hatched on May 28, being fed and hanging out with another recently hatched chick.“In a true example that ‘it takes a village,’ Brookfield Zoo Chicago penguins Divot and Rosie incubated the egg and cared for the chick after it hatched,” the zoo said in a press release.Given that penguins cannot tell the difference between their own eggs and others, staff gave Divot and Rosie artificial eggs to incubate, to help them adjust to their new roles as foster parents, said Cody Hickman, the associate director of avian conservation and care at the zoo. The duo “seamlessly adopted the new egg upon its arrival,” he added. The chick joined two other chicks, hatched on May 19 and February 19, respectively.
