The skull of a goat that provided milk to Napoleon Bonaparte aboard a British ship following his 1815 surrender could fetch thousands at auction. The skull was obtained by Hansons Auctioneers and is expected to fetch £2,000-£3,000 ($2,600–$3,900). The auction house described it as one of the “quirkiest animal-related finds ever”.According to Hansons, goats were used on 19th-century ships for milk and meat. This one belonged to Frederick Lewis Maitland, the man Napoleon surrendered to aboard HMS Bellerophon on July 15, 1815. Napoleon drank the goat’s milk during his time in captivity aboard the ship, the auctioneers said. The skull is part of the Maitland Collection of items related to Napoleon’s surrender, and will be auctioned from October 31.
