Protesters at the University of Chicago confronted and pushed back against police on Tuesday, May 7, as they began to dismantle a pro-Palestine encampment erected on campus a week earlier by student protesters.Footage from Brendan Gutenschwager shows protesters attempted to push police back from a barricade and chanting “shame on you.” Further footage shows the campus being cleared of tents and debris, and a speech delivered to protesters by Eman Abdelhadi, an associate professor at the university who supports the protests.According to ABC 7, police announced over loudspeakers that anyone who remained would be arrested for criminal trespassing. No arrests were made, according to the university. In a statement on the police raid, President of the University of Chicago Paul Alivisatos said protesting was “strongly protected” on campus but said these protests had interfered “with the free expression, learning, and work of others” and were the source of mounting “safety concerns.”However, according to the Chicago Tribune, Mayor Brandon Johnson said he and the Chicago Police Department repeatedly advised the university and its campus police force they had “serious safety and operational concerns” about the plan to disperse the camp. The dismantling of the site came as Israel seized the Gaza side of the Rafah border crossing ahead of an invasion of the south Gaza town.
