Police in Kalamazoo said they lost sight of a motorcyclist who jumped into a river to flee a traffic stop on January 1, and went under the frigid water and could not be found, despite officers following him in.According to the
Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS), officers had initiated a traffic stop on a motorcycle for a license plate violation on New Year’s Day around 4:30 pm. The driver did not stop and fled from the officer, eventually experiencing mechanical issues, at which point the driver abandoned the bike and fled on foot. Body camera footage shows the chase between the motorcyclist and the
KDPS officer.Police said the man ran into the Kalamazoo River to avoid being arrested, attempting to cross the river. "The river current pushed him downstream, and officers observed him go under water and [he] did not resurface," the
KDPS said.“Several officers entered the river in an attempt to rescue the individual; however, he was not found.”The
KDPS said it was working to confirm the identity of the man, and was asking the public for any helpful information. Credit: Kalamazoo Public Safety via Storyful
