Thousands of employees of the University of California’s research labs and medical facilities began striking on Wednesday, February 26, saying pay offered by the 10-campus system was too low and that staffing shortages were not being addressed.According to one report, more than 57,000 employees represented by two labor unions across the university system participated in the strike.One union, the University Professional and Technical Employees – CWA Local 9119, plans to strike through Friday, February 28. The other union, AFSCME Local 3299, plans to strike through Thursday, February 27.The unions were urging the University of California (UC) to deal with staffing shortages and allow employees to raise concerns about workplace conditions, which they claimed the university had restricted, according to another news report.Footage shows one strike at the UCLA campus on Wednesday, where employees walked along Westwood Boulevard toward chanting, “Who’s got the power?
