Tropical Storm Rafael Passes West of Jamaica

A tropical storm warning was in effect for the island of Jamaica on Tuesday, November 5, as Rafael swirled to its southwest in the Caribbean Sea, satellite imagery shows.The National Hurricane Center (NHC) warned that the storm had the potential to become a hurricane as it passed near the Cayman Islands, “with further strengthening before it makes landfall in Cuba.”Timelapse satellite imagery shows the sun rising on Rafael on Tuesday morning. The storm was expected to move near western Jamaica through early Tuesday afternoon, according to the NHC.As of 10 am EST on Tuesday, Rafael was located about 65 mi (105 km) southwest of Montego Bay and was carrying maximum sustained winds of 60 mph.
