A man’s journey to visit his family in Porto Alegre, Brazil, was interrupted on Tuesday, May 7, as they had to be evacuated due to catastrophic flooding.Yasser Soleiman, who lives in Las Vegas, told Storyful that he arrived with his father to Porto Alegre on May 1, when the flooding had already started.“When we awoke on the morning of May 7, the parking lot below us was flooded with up to a foot or more of water, and the surrounding area was completely under water,” Soleiman told Storyful.“By that late afternoon, the lights, gas and water had been shut off,” he continued. “Firemen came to rescue any residents still in the building, insisting that if we didn’t leave, we’d likely be trapped in the building for up to 10 days or more with no amenities. At this point we chose to leave.”They relocated to Florianopolis, where they “rode out the tragedy”, he said. Credit: Yasser Soleiman via Storyful
