More than 150 false killer whales washed ashore on a beach in Tasmania’s far north-west on Wednesday, February 19.According to the Marine Conservation Program of the Tasmanian Government, initial observations showed 90 whales were still alive after a pod of 157 were stranded on the state’s west coast near Arthur River.“We are currently assessing the situation to plan an appropriate response. Stranding response in this remote area is complex,” it said. This video taken by local woman Jocelyn Flint shows some of the whales heaving for breaths as they lie on the sand unable to move. The whales can be heard faintly crying in high pitches in the footage, taken both in the daylight and overnight, as Flint’s son rang her after midnight to alert her the mass stranding. The Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service closed Arthur Beach south of Bottle Creek, Sundown Point Road, and Nelson Bay Campground due to the whale stranding.
