Avalanche Hits Apartment Building in California's Olympic Valley

All people were accounted for after an avalanche struck an occupied three-story apartment building in Olympic Valley, northwest of Lake Tahoe, California, at around 7 pm on Tuesday, February 28, according to the Placer County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO).These photos, posted by the sheriff’s office on Wednesday morning, show a Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue crew and their dog at the scene on Shirley Canyon Road.“Fortunately, all occupants were uninjured and able to evacuate the building with help from fire crews,” the PCSO said. “The avalanche was approximately 200 yards wide and 25 feet deep and engulfed the bottom two stories of the building,” they added.Several areas, including Shirley Canyon Road, were evacuated due to the heightened avalanche risk, the PCSO said.Authorities would be re-evaluating the risk on Wednesday morning to determine if it was safe for residents to return, according to the sheriff’s office.
