A black woman, named online as Bree Newsome, scaled a flag pole outside the South Carolina Statehouse in Columbia on June 27 and removed the Confederate flag. The woman was arrested afterwards, according to reports, along with a man who had entered the fenced area surrounding the base of the flagpole.The incident occurred as South Carolinians, including Republican Governor Nikki Haley, continued to call for the removal of the flag from the grounds of the capitol building.
