Addressing the US Senate ahead of the arrival in Washington of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on December 21, Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer drew parallels between Zelensky and former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill.Churchill, who led the United Kingdom during the Second World War, delivered a
historic address to the US Congress on December 26, 1941, calling for America’s help in defeating the Axis powers of Germany, Japan, and Italy. In his opening remarks, Schumer said Zelensky’s visit would be “a day to remember in the history of the United States Congress.”Schumer said it was a “high honor” to welcome foreign heads-of-state to Congress but, noting that it was Zelensky’s first trip outside Ukraine since Russia invaded the country on February 24, said it was "nearly unheard of to hear from a leader who is fighting for his life, fighting for his country’s survival, and fighting to preserve the very idea of democracy.“Where Winston Churchill stood generations ago, so too President Zelensky stands, not just a president but also as an ambassador of freedom itself,” Schumer said.
