A Mexican rescue dog died while searching through rubble for survivors of devastating earthquakes that rocked southeastern Turkey on February 6, officials said.The dog, named Proteo, was dispatched to Turkey as part of a specialized search and rescue team, which included experts and canine teams from the Mexican Army, to help the search for survivors.Footage by the Mexican Red Cross shows members of the Mexican Army and Air Force saying their final goodbyes to Proteo.The Mexican Ministry of Defense said in a statement on Sunday: “Thank you Proteo for your heroic work, you accomplished the mission,” according to a machine translation.By Monday morning, Turkish disaster management agency AFAD reported a death toll of 31,643 in Turkey, and the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that Syria’s death toll had risen to 5,300, bringing the total death toll past 36,000.
