'We Will Be Here as Long as It Takes': EPA Assesses Damage in East Palestine After Train Derailment

Authorities from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) visited East Palestine, Ohio, on February 16, to test the impacts and assess the damage after a train derailed on February 3 and began leaking toxic chemicals. In a press conference on Thursday, February 16, EPA administrator Michael Regan assured residents that the air and water were safe, saying “robust” air quality testing and 24/7 monitoring have shown no problems. The Ohio Department of Health urged the few residents who use private wells to stick to bottled water until their wells can be tested.“In coordination with the state, we will be here as long as it takes to ensure the health and safety of the community. We’re not going anywhere until we do,” Regan said.An investigation into the cause of the derailment was ongoing, with preliminary findings expected toward the end of the month, local media reported.
