A Texas-based organization premiered an ad against gun violence dubbed ‘Thoughts and Prayers’ on Thursday, December 14, on the 11th anniversary of the Sandy Hook school shooting. The ad, created by the Mothers Against Greg Abbott PAC and their partners Mothers for Democracy, was made to criticize the “thoughts and prayers” statements routinely released by right-leaning politicians and other public figures following mass shootings in the US.In the one-minute clip, a girl is shown sitting at the edge of a pool reaching out for a pool float before falling into the water. A woman rushes to the pool, but instead of trying to save the child, she drops to her knees and clasps her hands in prayer.Several people around the woman, including a couple sitting in the pool and a neighbor mowing the lawn, shout “thoughts and prayers!”In a statement on their website, Mothers for Democracy said the video highlighted “the hypocrisy of people who say ‘thoughts and prayers’ while going on with their lives as if nothing has happened. They would rather stand around … instead of saving children’s lives.”Nancy Thompson, a cofounder of Mothers Against Greg Abbott, told Storyful: “The reception has been fantastic. [Political historian} Heather Cox Richardson included it in her newsletter last night. We expected the people who got mad to get mad. No big surprises. But overall we have had a ton of support and retweets about the ad.” Credit: Mothers for Democracy/Mothers Against Greg Abbott via Storyful
