A pair of giant spider crabs recently proved that even crustaceans sometimes need a hand – or claw – with footage showing one giving another a piggyback ride in the waters off Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula.Marine biologist Sheree Marris was documenting this year’s spider crab molting season when she came across the unusual scene. She told Storyful that, during molting season, thousands of crustaceans get together to march on to the sandy shallows to avoid being eaten, as the process of leaving one shell to grow a new one leaves them vulnerable.“It’s a tough world and the antics these crabs get up to at times are hilarious, including piggybacking on another crab to get around and avoid the hungry rays who are circling around,” she said.Marris said that she discovers new behavior every time she dives. She regularly documents the local marine life for her Instagram account. Credit: Sheree Marris via Storyful
