The London Zoo recently welcomed three rare Socorro doves from Portugal’s Lagos Zoo as part of an international restoration effort.The species has not been seen in the wild since 1971 and “today survive only in human care, making them one of the rarest animals in the world,” the zoo said.The three doves joined the six others of their kind at the zoo, and represent “an important milestone for the Socorro Dove Project,” an initiative that aims to return the species to Mexico’s Socorro Island by 2030, according to the Zoological Society of London.
