Hamas Releases Two Elderly Israeli Hostages to Red Cross

Two elderly women held captive by Hamas were released to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on October 23, multiple officials confirmed.Video released by Hamas on Telegram shows the two women being handed over to an ICRC representative.“The Al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Hamas movement, with Egyptian and Qatari mediation, release the two Israeli detainees in Gaza, Nurit Yitzhak and Yocheved Lifshitz, for compelling humanitarian and medical reasons,” Hamas said in the caption of their post on Telegram, according to a machine translation.The ICRC said it transported the hostages out of Gaza on October 23.The office of the Prime Minister of Israel released a statement thread via X confirming the two women, identified as 79-year-old Nurit Cooper and 85-year-old Yocheved Lifshitz, were released to Israeli officials and were en route to a hospital in Israel to receive care and meet with their families.Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said: “The two women were abducted from their homes on Kibbutz Nir Oz during the murderous assault on Saturday (7 October 2023).
