French police evacuated a large Roma camp on the outskirts of Paris on Thursday, July 11, ahead of the Olympic Games in the French capital.A prefectoral order cited the Games as one of the reasons why the camp was to be removed, saying that it was located near a course to be used for cycling events, and near an autoroute with lanes due to be “reserved for certain vehicles”.Footage by Luc Auffret shows law enforcement on the scene.Auffret described the camp as a “shanty town” where Roma people were living. He told Storyful the evacuation started around 7 am, and that associations “denouncing the ‘social cleansing’ of Paris streets in the run-up to the Olympic Games” were expecting an “acceleration of camp evacuations in the coming days”.
