Hundreds of people gathered at Place de la Republique in Paris in celebratory mood on January 7, after the death was announced of Jean-Marie Le Pen, the former leader of the far-right National Front, the party now known as National Rally.Footage sent to Storyful shows hundreds of people singing, chanting “Il est où? En enfer!” (or, “Where is he? In hell!”) and “Il est mort” (or, “He is dead”).More celebrations by people on the opposing side of the political spectrum took place in other French cities, including Lyon and Marseille, according to local news reports and footage circulating online.Le Pen died on January 7 at the age of 96. The former politician founded the National Front in 1972. He made history by reaching the second round of the French presidential election in 2002, before earning less than 18 percent of the votes against his opponent, the incumbent Jacques Chirac.His daughter Marine Le Pen is the National Rally’s parliamentary party leader.
