Melbourne Zoo welcomed three Luzon Bleeding Heart Doves on February 14, a species known for their striking red chest markings that resemble a heart, just in time for Valentine’s Day.Footage released by Zoos Victoria shows a dove with a bold red color on its chest.Bird keeper Ryan Pilgrim explains that for these feathered romantics, a brighter chest makes for a better chance at love, as males perform elaborate courtship dances to attract a mate. While their distinctive markings may resemble an injury to human eyes, other birds likely perceive them in a completely different spectrum, possibly as shades of pink or blue, the zoo said.Native to the forests of Luzon in the Philippines, these doves are listed as near threatened due to habitat loss and the pet trade, making their arrival at the zoo a crucial step in conservation efforts.
