Clashes continued in New Caledonia on Wednesday, May 22, as French President Emmanuel Macron traveled to the South Pacific territory to try to quell days of rioting following a move by French lawmakers to expand voting rights for residents.Footage filmed by RTL journalist Valentin Boissais shows bulldozers driving through Noumea, the capital.Boissais said that the bulldozers were escorted by the GIGN, the elite police tactical unit of the National Gendarmerie of France, and that they were used to dismantle roadblocks put up by rioters around the city.French government spokeswoman Prisca Thevenot announced that Macron would leave for New Caledonia “as soon as this evening” on Tuesday. The move that kickstarted the riots would expand the electorate for New Caledonia’s provincial elections to “include all citizens who have been residents of the country for 10 years,” according to Le Monde. The island’s pro-independence movement “fears a loss of electoral influence for the Kanak people,” Le Monde said.At least six people have been killed since the rioting and looting started, according to France24.
