A portion of Interstate 5 in Southern California was closed on Monday, January 27, because of snow that had started over the weekend.On Sunday evening, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) was escorting drivers across the Grapevine Summit on Interstate 5 because of “low visibility due to snow flurries,” according to a
video posted on X by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) District 7.By early Monday morning, that portion of the interstate was
closed, according to Caltrans.Later Monday morning, the
CHP Fort Tejon confirmed that I-5 remained closed “due to ice buildup on the road surface.”“Caltrans is working to clear the lanes of ice so motorists can pass through safely,” CHP Fort Tejon said on X. The CHP said it was “monitoring the storm and road conditions. There is no estimated time of reopening the freeway.”The mountainous area was under a winter weather advisory, with the
