Teen Kayaker Rescued After More Than 10 Hours in Hawaiian Waters

A 17-year-old kayaker was rescued in waters off Honolulu, Hawaii, in the morning hours of Thursday, October 17, after becoming separating from his paddle crew and capsizing on Wednesday evening, according to the US Coast Guard (USCG).The teen was reported to have gone missing at around 7:30 pm Wednesday in an area about half a mile south of Sheraton Waikiki Beach Resort, USCG said in the statement.A search operation was launched involving USCG boat, airplane, and helicopter crews, which were assisted by the Honolulu Fire Department and lifeguards from the Honolulu Ocean Safety Department.At 4:03 am, about seven-and-a-half hours after he went missing, an airplane crew spotted the teenager “clinging” to his kayak and “deployed a flare to mark the position offshore the War Memorial Natatorium,” the coast guard said. An off-duty lifeguard then responded and rescued the teenager.This aerial footage shows the moment the off-duty lifeguard arrived in a boat and pulled the teenager from the water.At 5:25 am, the teen was transferred “to Emergency Medical Services personnel at Ala Wai Harbor, where he was treated for injuries and hypothermia and transported to an area emergency room,” USCG said. “He was in serious but stable condition,” they added.
