Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store announced on Wednesday, May 22, that his government had decided the country would recognize the state of Palestine.“With tens of thousands of dead and injured, we must keep alive the only thing that can provide a safe home for both Israelis and Palestinians: Two states that can live in peace with each other,” he said.Ireland and Spain made similar announcements.Israel Katz, Israel’s foreign minister, responded by saying he had instructed “the immediate recall of Israel’s ambassadors to Ireland and Norway for consultations in light of these countries’ decisions to recognize a Palestinian state.” Katz said a similar move would be made regarding Spain if it confirmed its recognition of Palestine at a ministerial meeting next week. The decision of Ireland and Norway “sends a message to the Palestinians and the world: Terrorism pays,” Katz said.
