London Zoo announced on Monday, February 3, that over 30 endangered froglets had been “born” at the zoo after an expedition to save their species from extinction. The zoo said that the birth of 33 Darwin’s frogs was being heralded by conservationists as a “huge milestone,” as it follows efforts by the zoo to save the species from a deadly chytrid fungus in their natural habitat. In October 2024, conservationists traveled over 7,000 miles to an island off the coast of Chile to retrieve healthy Darwin’s frogs for safeguarding at London Zoo.London Zoo said that the froglets were carried and brooded by 11 male frogs rescued during the expedition.Darwin’s frogs employ a unique method to rear their tadpoles, with males carrying them inside their vocal sacs until they fully metamorphose into tiny frogs, London Zoo said.Footage provided by London Zoo shows conservationists retrieving Darwin’s frogs during the expedition.Additional images provided by London Zoo show the newly metamorphosed Darwin’s froglets, after they emerged from their dads at the zoo.
