Celebrations Erupt in Tblisi as Georgia Pulls Off Historic Euros Upset Over Portugal

Georgian fans took to the streets of Tbilisi to celebrate after their national team pulled off a historic win over Portugal in the group stage of the UEFA European Football Championship tournament in Germany on Wednesday, June 26.Footage filmed by Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty shows people jumping and chanting, waving Georgian flags, as well as drivers honking and fans waving the flags from their cars.Euro 2024 marked Georgia’s first appearance in major international tournament since the country’s independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. The Georgian side was the only debutant in 2024.The team’s 2-0 win against powerhouse Portugal propelled the country to the knockout round of 16, where they were set to face Spain on Sunday, June 30.Portugal also advanced and were scheduled to play against Slovenia on Monday, July 1.
