53-year-old Alabama woman Towana Looney donated one of her kidneys to her mother in 1999. She was put on dialysis several years later after developing kidney failure. Towana underwent 'xenotransplantation' in New York in November, becoming the first living person in the world to receive a pig kidney with 10 gene edits, designed to reduce the risk of rejection.
