Some of the animals at Chicago’s Brookfield Zoo have been enjoying a bit of variety in their diet, thanks to the emergence of periodical cicadas in their part of the world for the first time in 17 years.Footage from the zoo shows animals including cotton-top tamarins, meerkats, roadrunners, and others chowing down on the rarely seen treat.Periodical cicadas are among the longest-living insects on the planet, with the vast majority of their lives being spent underground, the University of Illinois said. The university called 2024 a “big year” for periodical cicadas in Illinois. Two broods, as they are know, Broods XIII and XIX, are emerging at the same time. This is the first time this has happened since 1803. Credit: Brookfield Zoo Chicago via Storyful
