Memorial stones for Holocaust victims were stolen in the eastern German town of Zeitz overnight on October 6-7, the city
said. The memorials were the brainchild of artist Gunet Demnig. They are made of 4x4-inch blocks with brass plates placed on the street in front of the houses where the victims lived before their deportation and murder by the Nazis. The stone lists their name, birthdate and which concentration camp they were taken to.The local district administrator Guetz Ulrich said, “whoever did this also wants to tear the Holocaust out of our memory.” In a
statement on X, he called the crime “unforgivable and inexcusable.”The city called on residents to gather at the sites of the damaged stones on October 19 in a show of support for the memorials. Credit: City of Zeitz via Storyful
