A memorial cross made by crewmates of the famed Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton upon his death during an expedition in 1922 has gone on public display in Scotland, over a century after it was first erected on the island of South Georgia.Video from the Dundee Heritage Trust shows the cross being unveiled at Discovery Point Dundee, in a service attended by the Irish-born explorer’s granddaughter Alexandra Shackleton.After Shackleton died on January 5, 1922, during his fourth voyage to Antarctica, members of the expedition crew made the cross out of wood salvaged from old whaling station buildings, according to the Dundee Heritage Trust.The cross stood in South Georgia until 2018, the trust said, before the decision was made to replace it with a replica.
