At least four people were injured after Russian drones bombarded civilian areas in Odesa, Ukraine, on Monday night, March 3, damaging dozens of homes, two kindergartens, and a business center, and cutting power to thousands of people, officials said.Footage posted by the Odesa City Council shows Mayor Gennady Trukhanov inspecting damage next to an electrical substation on a residential street in Odesa’s Kyiv district, and speaking to residents whose homes were damaged in the attack. One woman is comforted by the mayor as she breaks down in tears inspecting damage to her apartment. The street seen in the footage was recently renamed for Heorhiy Lipsky, an Odesa native who died aged 27 while fighting Russian forces in Kherson region in 2022.The governor of Odesa region, Oleg Kiper, said energy infrastructure had been targeted in the assault, causing power outages, and Ukraine’s largest private electricity company, DTEK, said one of its facilities was damaged in the attack. Crews managed to restore electricity to 7,000 customers by 8 am Tuesday, but state energy authority Ukrenergo urged residents to be frugal with their consumption while crews continued to carry out repairs to the system.According to Trukhanov, 91 homes and apartments were damaged or destroyed in the attack.Hundreds of people were displaced as a result of the strikes, local media reported. The Ukrainian air force said it shot down 25 Iranian-manufactured Shahed attack drones and 24 other drones during the assault on the city. The Odesa Regional Prosecutor’s Office launched a pre-trial war crimes investigation in response to the attack. The pro-Russian military propagandist Boris Rozhin alleged that the substation, which provides power to a small district in Odesa, was also used by the Ukrainian military but provided no evidence to support that claim.
