A man who attempted to murder his mother’s then-partner during a fake medical appointment has been sentenced to more than 30 years in prison, Northumbria Police said.Footage released by the force shows the moment 30-year-old Thomas Kwan was arrested by officers on February 2.Police said Kwan, a doctor, had sent the victim letters to set up a fake medical appointment at the victim’s Newcastle home on January 22.Kwan was seen driving to the appointment, in a car with fake number plates. He disguised himself using a medical mask, a wig, and fake facial hair so the victim would not recognise him as he administered an injection.Police said that in the hours after the injection, the victim became seriously ill and was eventually admitted to hospital. It was at the hospital that staff discovered the letters from Kwan. The victim survived the attempted poisoning but was left with life-changing injuries.Following the arrest, police found a “poisoner’s handbook” and a book on guidance for murder investigations on Kwan’s computer, the force said.Several files regarding poisons to kill a person and ideal poisons to use to evade detection were also uncovered.Kwan pleaded guilty to attempted murder in October, and was sentenced on Wednesday, November 6, to 31 years and five months in prison.
