A new volcanie eruption occurred on Iceland’s Reykjanes peninsula late on November 20.Drone photographer Jeroen Van Nieuwenhove flew over the 3-kilometer long fissure in the early hours of Thursday, capturing lava spewing out of the volcano, located between Stora-Skogfell and Sylingarfell, northeast of the town of Grindavik.According to Van Nieuwenhove and local news reports, Wednesday night’s eruption is the seventh eruption in the Sundhnuksgigarod crater row since December 2023.“While it was originally thought not to happen in November, everyone was caught by surprise when a new intrusion formed very rapidly and turned into an eruption effortlessly,” Van Nieuwenhove said. “Fortunately, it seems to be erupting in a pretty favorable area again, away from Grindavik and critical infrastructure.”The eruption was believed to have reached its peak by early on Thursday, according to the Icelandic Meteorological Office, which said no lava was flowing toward Grindavik. The town of Grindavik was evacuated and a state of emergency was declared following the eruption, the Civil Defense announced.
