A brand new “BatCam” has been set up in Wingham Brush Nature Reserve, New South Wales, which allows viewers to take a peek into the lives of grey-headed flying foxes. The livestream, operated by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, allows anyone to tune into the daily routine of bats from dawn until dusk. The grey-headed flying fox is listed as a vulnerable species under both New South Wales law and federal Australian law, according to the state government. Their population is in decline due to habitat loss and climate change. While the livestream is fun for viewers, it also allows staff to monitor the health of the fox colony.“By bringing BatCam into homes and classrooms, I hope more people will come to know and love these charismatic creatures and gain a deeper appreciation for the essential role they play in our natural world,” parks service team leader Tabetha Kempe said.
