The Florida Aquarium in downtown Tampa relocated nine African penguins to high ground on Tuesday, October 8, a day before Hurricane Milton was expected to make landfall in the area.Staff said they were “taking proactive measures to safeguard its animals, including relocating its beloved African penguins” away from the aquarium’s waterfront location in downtown Tampa, where a storm surge of more than 10 feet was
predicted.“Several other animals were moved today, including a smack of moon jellies, six snakes, three lizards, three turtles, two alligators, two toads and a hermit crab,” the Florida Aquarium said in a press release. Two days earlier, the aquarium announced that it had transported thousands of corals, including endangered pillar and elkhorn coral, “to safer locations in Georgia, West Palm Beach, and Miami.”They also said a sea turtle rescued after Hurricane Helene had been moved to the aquarium’s downtown campus, where it would “weather the storm safely” on the second floor. The aquarium was closed from Tuesday, October 8, and was
scheduled to reopen on Saturday, October 12, after the storm passed. Credit: The Florida Aquarium via Storyful
