A Republican official commented the citizenship status of an elected county official during a public meeting in White Plains, New York, on Tuesday, February 18.Jose Alvarado, Vice-Chairman of the Westchester County Board of Legislators, asked Republican Representative Mike Lawler what documentation people should be expected to produce if they are approached by ICE.Lawler responded saying that people approached by law enforcement should “cooperate,” before questioning Alvarado’s citizenship status.“I assume you’re a citizen, maybe you’re not,” Lawler said.Lawler’s comment prompted some members of the board to laugh; one person can be heard saying that it was “unbelievable.”“That’s the point that I’m making,” Alvarado said, gesturing towards Lawler, “do you walk around with your birth certificate?”“I don’t, do you?” Lawler responds.“I don’t and I am a citizen, otherwise I wouldn’t be duly elected to serve on this board,” Alvarado said.Lawler later provided clarification on his remark:“My point to you was like everyone else, who is a citizen, if you are encountered by law enforcement and they ask you for documentation, you provide it.” Credit: Westchester County Board of Legislators via Storyful
