Scenes of Devastation After Deadly Fire Rips Through Rohingya Camp

At least two people were killed and hundreds of shelters destroyed after a fire broke out in a Rohingya camp located in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, local media and UNHCR reported on December 24.According to reports, Md Tanharul Islam, Deputy Director of the Cox’s Bazar Fire Service and Civil Defence, confirmed that two individuals died following a fire that started in Block D of the Lombashia 1-West Rohingya camp in Ukhiya.The blaze broke out at approximately 12:45 pm, and while the bodies of the deceased were recovered, their identities remained unknown, they said.Very graphic pictures circulating on social media showed burned bodies.Deputy Director Islam said that the cause of the fire had not yet been determined, but investigations were underway.Residents reported that the fire began in a shelter within the camp and quickly spread to nearby structures, according to local media.The UN Refugee Agency in Bangladesh wrote on X that the fire was under control “thanks to the heroic efforts of the refugee community, Rohingya volunteer firefighters, and local fire service.”The Rohingya, a predominantly Muslim group and the world’s largest stateless population, began fleeing en masse to Bangladesh in 2016 to escape what the United Nations has described as genocide perpetrated by the military of Buddhist-majority Myanmar.Fooatge captured by Muhammad Eliyas shows the aftermath of the fire in the refugee camp.
