A civilian jet plane broke the sound barrier for the first time over continental USA during a historic test flight over the Mojave Desert on January 28. The XB-1 aircraft, manufactured by Boom Supersonic, ascended to 35,290 feet before accelerating to Mach 1.12 or 750mph. The flight marks the first independently developed jet to break the sound barrier.
