US President Donald Trump welcomed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the White House on Tuesday, February 4, despite a
warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for Netanyahu’s arrest.Among the topics expected to be discussed by the two leaders on Tuesday was the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas, according to
reports. The visit drew condemnation from various advocacy and civil rights groups, including
Amnesty International,
Human Rights Watch and the
Center for Constitutional Rights. The US is not a state party to the ICC’s Rome Statute, but played a
key role in its establishment and has cooperated with the court on issues pertaining to its foreign policy interests.Former US President Joe Biden
welcomed the ICC’s decision to issue an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2023, and
ordered his administration to share evidence of Russian war crimes with the court. However, in 2024, Biden
condemned the court’s decision to issue arrest warrants for Israeli leaders as “outrageous.” Credit: Margo Martin via Storyful
