Houston Zoo announced the birth of a “healthy and strong” female elephant born on Friday, November 15.“Houston Zoo has a BIG reason to give thanks this season,” the zoo wrote in a press release. This footage shows Kirby, the adorable 314-pound baby who was born after a 19-hour labor by her mom, Shanti, in Houston Zoo’s McNair Asian Elephant Habitat cow barn, “under the supervision of her keepers and veterinary staff,” the zoo said. The zoo said the baby elephant was standing “within six minutes, walking 25 minutes later, and began nursing within an hour and a half of being born.”Elephants pregnancies typically last 21 months, one of the longest gestation periods of any land mammal, according to the zoo.Shanti and Kirby both underwent post-natal exams and are expected to spend “several days bonding behind the scenes before they are ready to make their public debut.” Credit: Kevin Kendrick/Houston Zoo via Storyful
