Wildlife services in Kenya successfully transferred 54 elephants from Mwea National Reserve to Aberdare National Park, authorities
said on Wednesday, October 16.Footage released by the Kenya Wildlife Service shows some of the elephants en route to their new home.The elephant population in Mwea had risen from 49 individuals in 1979 to 156 in 2024, exceeding the reserve’s carrying capacity, the wildlife service said.The move aimed to mitigate environmental degradation in the Mwea National Reserve due to overpopulation, the service added.The service said the relocation of the animals was carried out over 17 days.
