Belgian customs officials destroyed a shipment of Miller High Life on April 17, because the beer’s slogan, “the Champagne of Beers,” was deemed by the Comite Champagne to be “an infringement” on the famous French bubbly’s designation of origin.According to the Comite Champagne, they requested “the destruction of the illicit goods,” which were intercepted in the port of Antwerp in February. The 2,352 cans were all recycled, the Comite Champagne said. The decision “confirms the importance that the European Union attaches to designations of origin and rewards the determination of the Champagne producers to protect their designation,” said Charles Goemaere, managing director of the Comité Champagne. In a statement, Molson Coors Brewing Company said, “Of course, we respect local restrictions around the word ‘champagne,’ but we remain proud of Miller High Life, its nickname and its Milwaukee, Wisconsin provenance … We invite our friends in Europe to the US any time to toast the High Life together.” Credit: Comite Champagne via Storyful
