Several trade unions gathered outside the Department of Labor on Wednesday, February 5, joining nationwide protests against the Trump administration’s actions in the early weeks of his presidency.Footage from the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) shows protesters chanting, “Stand up, fight back!” and “Elon Musk has got to go.”Demonstrators held signs reading, “Democracy Dies in Complacency,” “Nobody Elected Musk,” and “Hands Off Workers’ Data.”Representatives from other trade organizations, including the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), SMART Union, and Machinists Union, were also present.In an online post, organizers said they believed the Department of Labor was “next on Musk’s takeover list,” after a meeting was scheduled for Musk at the Department of Labor.The Trump administration has offered federal employees a deferred resignation buyout program, deemed the “Fork in the Road Directive,” which employees must accept or reject by midnight on Thursday.Last week, Musk’s team gained access to the US Treasury payment system, which is responsible for 1 billion payments per year totaling $5 trillion and includes sensitive information involving bank accounts and Social Security payments, the Associated Press reported.
