Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (
RSF) paramilitary group posted footage on Monday, April 17, showing
RSF fighters inside the grounds of the country’s military intelligence and command headquarters in Khartoum. The videos were published as fighting continued between the
RSF and Sudan’s armed forces, two days after an outbreak of violence at military and government sites. The violence was a result of a power struggle between Sudan’s de facto ruler and army chief, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and
RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, commonly known as Hemedti and who supported al-Burhan’s rise to power in a 2021 coup.In an interview with
Sky News on Monday, al-Burhan, reportedly speaking from a military intelligence building in Khartoum, said the compound was secure but that the
RSF was firing and shelling from nearby buildings.Speaking to
CNN on Sunday, Hemedti placed blame for the violence on al-Burhan and apologized to the Sudanese people. The
RSF also
claimed to have seized Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (
SBC) in Omdurman, but the army later said it regained control of the building,
Sky News reported.A Sudanese medical group
said at least 97 people had been killed and 365 were injured in the violence by Sunday night. Credit: Rapid Support Forces via Storyful
