A Russian court
has sentenced 22-year-old British man James Scott Rhys Anderson to 19 years of imprisonment for fighting alongside Ukrainian forces.Anderson’s sentence would include five years in prison, with the remaining term in a “maximum security penal colony,” the court said. He had “decided to take part in the armed conflict because of the monetary reward,” according to the court statement. The sentence could still be appealed, the court said.Anderson was captured in November, while fighting with the Ukrainian army in Kursk, local media
said.In late February, Ankur Narayan, of the UK Foreign Office,
said Anderson was being held “on false charges of so-called mercenaryism.”He described Anderson as a prisoner of war, citing Ukrainian confirmation that he served as a member of the country’s armed forces. Credit: Kursk Judicial System via Storyful
