The French island territory of Mayotte was devastated on Sunday, December 15, a day after Cyclone Chido ripped across the region, leaving at least a dozen people dead.Footage captured by social user Zokweli TV shows destroyed homes, beached boats, and debris strewn across the capital of Mamoudzou. According to the French meteorological service, the cyclone was of a magnitude “not seen in over 90 years” in the region, with wind gusts reaching up to 200 km/h (about 124 mph).According to the French newspaper Le Monde, citing Prime Minister of France Francois Bayrou, the death toll from the storm has not yet been established, but to date there have been “about 20” fatalities, 200 seriously injured, and 1,500 others “in relative emergency.”French President Emmanuel Macron announced he would be traveling to the territory in the coming days to “support our fellow citizens, civil servants, and the emergency services that have been mobilized.”Macron also said he would declare “national mourning.” Credit: Zokweli TV via Storyful
