People were exchanging currency in Al-Marjeh Square in Damascus, Syria, on Tuesday, December 17, after the practice was reintroduced following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime.Footage filmed by Obada Jbara shows men in Damascus with hefty stacks of bills exchanging Syrian pounds for US dollar notes at a small table with a sign reading “Exchange” taped to it.Assad banned the use of foreign currencies in business transactions back in 2013.Syrians conducting transactions in foreign currencies risked up to seven years in prison, according to news reports.Jbara told Storyful that one of the men exchanging currency in the video was jailed by the Assad regime “many times” for his work as a moneychanger.
